Creative Vermont Photographers at the St. Johnsbury Antheneum

When Julia and Matthew reached out with their ideas for an engagement shoot, I knew immediately this would be one of those sessions that fuels you for weeks. They’re getting married next year at the stunning Maquam Barn and Winery, and had a clear, artful vision for their engagement photos that made my job—truly—the dream job of all creative Vermont photographers.

We met at the historic St. Johnsbury Atheneum, a space that offered the exact quiet drama and romanticism they were going for. The soft natural light, grand architecture, and rich textures of the Atheneum paired perfectly with Julia’s vintage-inspired dress. Their style was on pointe, and I was excited to play with the textures of the paintings as a beautiful backdrop for most frames. (Thank you so much to Arlene and the staff there, who made it a wonderful experience!).

As a Vermont-based photographer, I love when couples lean into mood and storytelling. Sessions like this one remind me of my creative instincts. Playing around, without a narrow time structure, allows all of us to relax into the experience. So much emphasis is placed on a wedding day, and it is SO FUN to slow down and focus on the engagement.

Engagement sessions in Vermont can look like so many different things; embracing nature with an outdoor session, finding a beautiful building and embracing the amazing architecture, or even a fun recent trend of taking photos at home with furbabies. For couples looking for creative Vermont photographers, finding someone who gets your vision—and loves running with it—can elevate your entire experience.
