A Spring Backyard Wedding: Vermont Film Photography

 

 

Huge felicitations to JahAsia and Grey, who got married on Grey’s family’s property in Brandon, Vermont.

Their charming brick house was an excellent backdrop for the small, 20 person event. JahAsia’s eye for vintage, pretty details made photographing their decor a dream. They got each others’ initials tattooed on their hands before their wedding day. Because of their appreciation of vintage, and because I knew they valued a sense of presence, I knew that my film photography would be a key offering from my time with them.

I was amazed when I saw her step out of the house for her ceremony. She had a re-designed vintage dress with a matching choker and a cascading bouquet, complete with a mantilla-style veil that was jaw-dropping. Her cute shoes added a chic touch with their pearl straps. As corny as it sounds, the world seemed to brighten when JahAsia entered the space. Everyone’s eyes were on her, and Grey was overwhelmed.

Their vows were funny and sweet. They shared a lace-trimmed copy of their favorite Nâzım Hikmet Ran poem and read it to their guests.

“I kneel down: I look at the earth,
the grass,
insects,
little stems blooming with blues.
You are like the spring earth, my love,
I’m looking at you.
I lie on my back: I see the sky,
the branches of a tree,
storks on the wing,
a waking dream.
You are like the spring sky, my love,
I see you.
At night I light a campfire: I touch fire,
water,
cloth,
silver.
You are like a fire lit beneath the stars,
I touch you.
I go among people: I love people,
action,
thought,
struggle.
You are one person in my struggle,
I love you.”

This poem, also a personal favorite, was poignant and perfect for them. They promised, as in the poem, to work for humanity and for the world. It is special, and worth working for. And when you have someone to work for it with, it becomes a deeper journey.

In their vows, they promised to work together to make the world a better place. They promised to laugh together and love each other.

I had not met them before their wedding day, and in hearing their vows I was so sure that true love was standing in front of me. That’s a gorgeous thing to see, and an even better thing to photograph.

After a kiss accompanied by vintage bell-ringing, they toasted with their families and enjoyed the sunny Vermont spring day, now as a married couple.
